CAPE TOWN – As previously reported in the media, Tristan Perez, who is currently facing criminal charges in connection with the alleged murder of Elana Brooke, had been training with Blue Bells Cricket Club, which is an affiliate member of the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA).
Whereas WPCA had been made aware of Perez’ intention to seek membership and represent Blue Bells CC, he had not been registered to play in any competition under the jurisdiction of WPCA.
WPCA notes and respects the decision of Blue Bells CC not to grant Perez membership. WPCA acknowledges the constitutional principle that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, WPCA shares the concerns expressed by multiple voices about the prevalence of gender-based violence and femicide and the related conversations about accountability, safety and the responsibility of all institutions, including sporting organisations, to play their part in creating safer communities.
Whereas the By-Laws, Playing Conditions and Code of Behaviour of the WPCA do not specifically prohibit a person facing pending criminal proceedings from playing for a WPCA club, it is incumbent on the WPCA, as set out in its Constitution, to promote, provide for, regulate and manage all or any details or arrangements or other things as may be considered necessary or desirable for, or ancillary to, the comfort, conduct, convenience or benefit of cricket players and of the public or of any other persons concerned or engaged in or associated with Active Cricket.
The WPCA through its Local Leagues Committee will continue to strive to fulfil this objective when exercising its discretionary powers in all matters pertaining to the registration and eligibility of players.
