WPCA pays tribute following the passing of Armien Jabaar

NEWLANDS – The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) is deeply saddened by the passing of former Western Province Cricket Board player Armien Jabaar, who passed away on 2 February 2026 at the age of 81.

Born on 6 November 1944, Jabaar was a respected figure in Western Province cricket, representing the province during the 1960s and early 1970s, a period that helped shape the game’s rich history in the region.

His contribution to cricket extended beyond performances on the field, as he formed part of a generation of players who played with pride, resilience, and a deep love for the game during a challenging era.

The WPCA acknowledges his lasting legacy and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the broader cricket community during this time of mourning.

“The passing of Armien Jabaar is a profound loss for Western Province cricket and the entire South African cricketing community. His story is one of extraordinary patience, immense skill, and undying passion,” said Johannes Adams, WPCA President.

“Armien’s career reminds us that true class cannot be denied, even if its full recognition is delayed. Forced to wait until the age of 30 for his provincial debut due to the incredible depth of talent in our region, he responded not with bitterness, but with relentless performance. When his time finally came, he seized it with both hands, becoming a pillar of WP cricket for over a decade – a fierce competitor, a shrewd captain, and a match-winner with both bat and ball.”

“His legacy is not just in the record books – though his remarkable 11-wicket haul at the age of 46 stands as a testament to his enduring quality – but in the spirit he embodied. He was a leader who demanded excellence, a sportsman who played the game hard and fair, and a mentor who shaped the careers of many who followed.

“On behalf of the Western Province Cricket Association, I extend our deepest condolences to his wife Rashieda, his son Waleed, and his wide circle of friends and family. We have lost a giant of our game. His patience, his leadership, and his legendary leg-spin will forever be a part of our rich history.”

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Rashieda, and his son, Waleed, to whom the WPCA extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.
